That's it! The Analog / Digital switch is the key. After I changed its state 
in Alsamixer sounds now works !
I disabled Pulseaudio stuff for now. But maybe this will work also with 
Pulseaudio (not sure about the merit of pulseaudio, and I know that some 
people don't like it. But out of curiosity, I might just give it a try.)
