That's exactly where a VM comes in. I can run an old OS in a VM, behind a modern
firewall, mail system, etc. The thing I can't do is go on the net with with an
old browser or serve anything with old servers. Depends on what you do with it,
I have the "KRUD" FC6 as my print server, because some vendor hardware went
unsupported after that, and it's an easy solution. I used to have one app
running in an RH8 VM, getting and saving data to an NFS mounted filesystem. At
least as secure as the host.
As a file server I agree, newer is better, and if you run software raid, quite
recent is likely to be even more desirable in a few months.
