yes, i understood your question, and apologize for leaving out what i was
thinking.

instead of using a virtual terminal from withing 'x', try using
<ctrl+alt+fn>, where 'fn' is <f2> thru <f6> to see what happens.

when trying from an x-terminal within desktop, and you get a blank screen,
have you tried <ctrl+c>?

or try switching to another command terminal using <ctrl+alt+fn> or
<alt+fn>?

i would imagine that you have, but i am just mentioning them.
