Run the tried and true:
$ alsamixer -c 0
set the sound levels to what you like and test it out. Once you are satisfied with sound levels, run
$ su -
passwd:
# /sbin/alsactl store
This should keep sound settings across reboots. If PA were still alive, you would have had an extra
$ pauvcontrol
to also keep PA happy :), but if it is not there, then need not worry!
Then run above command after this one.
