less /var/log/yum.log | grep xmms
Jul 11 12:47:25 Installed: 1:xmms-libs-1.2.11-5.20071117cvs.fc11.x86_64
Jul 11 12:47:26 Installed: 1:xmms-1.2.11-5.20071117cvs.fc11.x86_64
Jul 11 12:47:38 Installed: xmms-mplayer-0.5-2.fc11.x86_64

(3 more entries installing/uninstalling xmms-cdread. I remember that.)

So, xmms has been installed when I installed Mplayer. I didn't check
closely what was installed: I thought everything related to Mplayer had to
be checked, and that's how I discovered SMplayer.

I never thought there could be anything in MPlayer relating to XMMS, but I
should have checked. Still, since XMMS is now considered legacy, I believe
it shouldn't be suggested as an option when installing MPlayer. Any geek
wanting to use MPlayer will find the way to install it, I suppose.

less /var/log/yum.log | grep rhythmbox
Jun 29 21:55:50 Erased: rhythmbox
Jul 17 13:28:03 Installed: rhythmbox-0.12.1-3.fc11.x86_64

Of course, I don't remember erasing rhythmbox on June 29th, Let's see...

less /var/log/yum.log | grep 'Erased' | grep 'Jun 29'

Jun 29 21:55:33 Erased: sound-juicer
Jun 29 21:55:40 Erased: brasero
Jun 29 21:55:42 Erased: brasero-nautilus
Jun 29 21:55:42 Erased: brasero-libs
Jun 29 21:55:50 Erased: rhythmbox

If I remember well, when I reinstalled Rhytmbox, it asked for components
of Brasero. A quick search at Google tells me that rhythmbox can burn CDs.
But, at the time, I probably thought it was some component of Brasero. Now
I suppose that the absence of sound-juicer will cause me problems too if I
want to rip CDs. I will reinstall it.

But why the hell doesn't yum remove only what it's asked? It seems to me
that it's really sweeping too wide.

Thanks for your help. Is anybody anywhere taking notice of the problems
new Fedora users experience on this mailing list?
