Which directory contents I can remove??

Which is why I never advocate that the novice user go about doing "clean
up" of /tmp and /var/tmp on running systems.  If they are really
concerned about file space being taken up by these....then I follow what
was (and maybe still is) the Solaris approach and create a startup or
shutdown job that clears those directories early or late in the sequence.
