Actually, it's more complicated than that:
* In KDE 3, the default browser was indeed the default handler for the file
type, usually text/html.
* In KDE 4, it defaults to that, but can be set separately under "Default
Components" in System Settings.
* In GNOME, there are separate "Preferred Applications" settings (like KDE
4's "Default Components"), the file associations are not used.
