If you don't want to make an RPM, then you just need to edit your
configure line to be:

# ./configure --prefix=/usr --libdir=/usr/lib
(that may need to be /usr/lib64, but I think you are building for i386)
# make
# make install

If you do want to make an RPM, then after your configure, you should
have a curl-java.spec file. Edit it and replace

./configure --prefix="%{_prefix}"

With:

./configure --prefix="%{_prefix}" --libdir="%{_libdir}"

Then:

mkdir -p ~/rpmbuild/SPECS
mkdir -p ~/rpmbuild/SOURCES
cp ../curl-java-0.2.3.tar.gz ~/rpmbuild/SOURCES
cp curl-java.spec ~/rpmbuild/SPECS
rpmbuild -ba ~/rpmbuild/SPECS/curl-java.spec

That should produce you an RPM in ~rpmbuild/RPMS/

(at least this all worked for me)
