is there a fairly new linux framebuffer howto?

  a friend want to know about framebuffers, so i figured i'd do that
google thing and came up with this:

that's pretty dated -- is there something newer on the topic?  the
contents of the kernel documentation under Documentation/fb looks
pretty ancient as well, at least some of it.
