F12 not playing well with Radeon HD 4870, Japanese IM not working at all

I mentioned on list recently that I upgraded from F10 to [clean install of]
F11. Under F10 I had been using the fglrx driver with my ATI HD 4870, and I
had tried and failed to use the Catalyst driver under F11. Well, at least I
didn't have to do anything special to use my computer with the Radeon driver
under F11. Today I made the mistake of upgrading to F12, only to find that
Radeon driver isn't working by default at all. All I get is a blank screen
during boot after Grub, unless I edit the kernel parameters to include
"nomodeset". I'm modifying the grub.conf file right now to add it there to
see if I continue to have this problem, but even when the video is working
the performance is horrible. My display seems to get updated at about half
the speed it was getting updated under F11, and that was sometimes painfully
slow compared to the fglrx driver under F10. Now, I will admit that the
experimental mesa dri drivers do seem to work, so I at least have some 3d
support, but it's irritating me that if I move a window on screen, I get to
watch the screen redraw in slow motion, and slowly eliminate the "echo
lines" as I'm calling them.

Oh, and it seems that the Japanese Input Methods will suddenly no longer
work. I've double checked the keystroke setting and even changed it, but I
can't get it to activate even though I have the lovely icon in the system
tray for it.

All in all, I'm less than impressed with F12. I hope it gets better real
soon...
Raymond
