Thank you all for your comments on logging in as root. On the whole, I
agree with the sentiments expressed. However, I have to stress that this
is MY system, NOT connected to any local network and that no-one except
myself even knows my user password.
Therefore, I repeat : I like to do things via a GUI rather than command
line even though my skills in the latter are at a higher level (I worked
in the computer industry all my professional life from the time when
they had just issued from the laboratory as a commercially viable
machine, albeit vacuum tubed!!!!!, and, during that time, designed
processors, programmed in binary, wrote assemblers and language
compilers and many other aspects involving these contraptions!).
In closing, I wonder what our world would look like today if Babbage's
machine had proved workable in the sense that it could be manufactured
easily and at an attractive price.
Back to the main topic : actually, I suppose I could fire up a terminal,
do an su, and then fire up a GUI : but that has only just occurred to
me!
Thanks again, CroombeFP
