Remote Desktop terminates when opening System>Preferences>Appearance

Here is a clue; the following lines appear in /var/log/messages just
after I perform the GUI action that aborts the session.

Note: all messages are from gnome-session[3573]:

GLib-GObject-WARNING: cannot register existing type `PkPangoFcFontMap'

GLib-GObject-CRITICAL: g_object_new: assertion `G_TYPE_IS_OBJECT
(object_type)' failed

GLib-GObject-CRITICAL: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)'
failed
