I remember I had a similar problem with intel graphics a couple of years 
ago.
Intel couldn't handle the 3D very well and Blender wouldn't work.
I installed an nvidia GT8600, nvidia drivers and the problem went away 
on F9, F10 and now F11
I don't know about laptops.
My daughter uses Blender 2.49a on her Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop, has 
done for years and it has an nvidia graphics card, she refuses intel 
graphics.
