Fernando Lopez-Lezcano of PlanetCCRMA replied to me in private, here's
the part of his mail (forwarded with permission) which is related to the
"infrastructure" stuff:

Subject: Re: on kernel module packaging (from thread on fedora-devel)

Background: I don't package (at Planet CCRMA) as many kernel modules as
Dag or Axel, but I do package ALSA (and midishare) and have been doing
that since 2001 (with matching custom kernels with good low latency
behavior). I have found through experience (and after making many
mistakes) most of the solutions that are being proposed in this email
(of course not using exactly the same names and all that):

https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-maintainers/2005-
March/msg00096.html

I agree with the approach to dependency resolving explained there (ie:
tying the kernel module with the proper kernel through kernel version,
variant and architecture as explicit requires). I think I also like the
"let's use uname" approach. I'm using something similar in my kernels,
including special provides that are "required" in the kernel modules.
Obviously I'll have to change again things at my end once all the big
names agree on something, sigh [*].
