The big-bang approach - If you think this is the right way to handle
this issue, I could not disagree more.

Metacity uses automake-1.7, uses AM_MAINTAINER_MODE, the only patch
affecting the autotools is a one liner, so providing a patch would be
trivial and painless.

BTW: The gettext-thing probably is a missing dep in intltool.
