Thank you for putting that succinctly!  I am interested in both kinds
of functionality -- running 32-bit programs on 64-bit machines (for 
testing purposes and "real use") *and* building 32-/64-bit software.

I think it is sub-optimal to focus only on one of these aspects when
(with perhaps only a tiny additional effort) you can have both.  I am
not 100% sure what is the best way to get both but the relatively simple
ideas put forth by Axel deserve consideration IMO.
