Again with the rightness.

The proper fix is going to involve adding another field, and the other
change I'd like to implement adds yet another one, so maybe we've
finally outgrown the current implementation branches system. I certainly
don't mind just adding more fields, but the maintainability will suffer.

I don't mind tossing in a bit of documentation with the next patch, but
I want to elicit the opinions of others about this.
