But that's not the main reason for this post: Inspired by an idea from Greg and thanks to help from Luke Macken, we've now a liveusb-creator build for Windows with support for the Sugar spin available here: http://sdz.fedorapeople.org/olpc/liveusb-creator-3.0.zip What does this mean? Well, you can now just run liveusb-creator on Windows and get that way the latest Sugar spin on your USB key, from which you can then boot (once your BIOS supports that). Well, basically, this means that you can now grab an iso image and have a look at the Sugar desktop environment without needing to install it anywhere. That way, you can give Sugar a test drive just on your normal machine. Since we're still in the progress of getting all the activities (you may get for your XO) ported into Fedora, this image doesn't include all of them, yet -- work in progress ;) > I was brought in to help with the fedora 10 testing on OLPC, but I'm > still having a hard time telling which of the billions of mails to the > testing and OLPC lists are relevant to me. ;) > > As people start getting their XOs, is there going to be a coordination > effort to make it more obvious what specific things we should be doing > to give relevant test help? As far as I know, there are gregdek, jlaska and jeremy working on the coordination of the testing efforts. My e-mail wasn't that much related to the upcoming OLPC testing effort, since it concerns the port of Sugar to Fedora and not the port of Fedora to the XO... ;) > Is there a jargon file somewhere that describes what a "spin" and an > "overlay" are and how they relate to a live CD, which I assume is > something different. When any sort of flash memory is produced there are minute differences with the internal structure. For this project we'll need to use an OEM part which ensures that we have the same card structure with every SD we send through the duplicator. Retail packaged cards do not have a consistent internal structure which can cause quality issues with a duplication run. It's not that retail is inferior quality, but for day to day use (in a camera, phone or other application) write tolerances don't need to be as precise. Spin is defined at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/CustomSpins. It means a custom of particular Fedora packages targeted towards specific set of users. The was I worked it out was just a basic grep to remove .fc9 packages as to see what was left. The first 3 sections are easy fix and mostly either the package isn't in Fedora (first section), is using a branch that's not in Fedora cvs (is there a cvs for OLPC packages) or ones that are easy to merge with mainline. It looks like 8.2.0 release is now done so the fixes would be going towards 9.1 one at a guess, and I suspect some of this will be dependent on whether its based on F-9 still or F-10. Anyway, I'm not sure if the info below is useful. Sections 3 and 4 (and at least some in section 2) should be fairly simple to get aligned with mainline fedora devel, and probably pushed to F-9 as well if necessary. I can look to get this done if it would be helpful but if its not I don't want to waste time on it. If so let me know. I think the process would be essentially get any changes/fixes if necessary into mainline and the get joyride to pull the mainline package in rather than the branch. Once that's done the branch would then get marked as dead. So let me know if its a help and if someone wants me to do further. It allows you to update your software (except the kernel) and save your settings and data without losing them on reboots. Go, get them here: http://sdz.fedorapeople.org/olpc/sugar-spin.iso http://sdz.fedorapeople.org/olpc/liveusb-creator-3.0.zip The image now includes the sugar-browse activity, which makes it far more usable than it was before. We've also switched from gdm to slim as a display manager, which is more light-weight and allows us to drop some dependencies. Due to some recent issues with it, we needed to disable SELinux, but we plan to turn it into permissive mode again, once these issues are fixed. Can't get revisor to give me a separate yum log at the moment, but I managed to get yum into high-debug mode. So the messages are mixed between revisor and yum, but it seems to make sense: http://dev.laptop.org/~martin/revisoryum.log.bz2 It definitely sees 2.8-8, and I can't spot anything that calls glibc-2.8-3 *except* that there's a mention of it being included "from Groups" -- Including glibc >From Groups: Adding glibc-0:2.8-8.i686 to transaction >From Groups: Adding glibc-0:2.8-8.i386 to transaction >From Groups: Adding glibc-0:2.8-3.i386 to transaction >From Groups: Adding glibc-0:2.8-3.i686 to transaction and later 2.8-3 wants the matching glibc-common, which *is* in the repo. However, yum doesn't like it and it doesn't settle for the 2.8-8 set. Do the logs make sense to you? It allows you to update your software (except > the kernel) and save your settings and data without losing them on reboots. Well, to be a little bit more clear. Whenever you're running off of a live image, you're using an "overlay", or more specifically, a device-mapper snapshot on top of the rootfs. That's how we allow changes to be made while the system is running. That overlay can either be a) Kept in RAM. This is the default with live images b) Backed by disk. We tend to refer to this as "persistent", but it can also be used for non-persistent and disk-backed although that's not easy to enable at the moment Note that given that we use dm-snapshot for the overlays, you can't use them to save data and change out the base image. The answer there is just doing a persistent /home and being careful to keep your data in your homedir rather than making system changes. This is potentially interesting to think about with the thought of using /home off of the NAND on the OLPC. But that's a day or so away... Yeah, when you selected Open With Extractor it must have only extracted the exe file, and not the DLLs and other tools (7Zip, dd, syslinux). This happens to a lot of people, and I'm not sure of any way to avoid it. Sadly, we have to ship the M$ C & C++ runtimes to ensure that the tool runs on a freshly installed box. The problem with Sebastian's build was that he did not manually add the C++ runtime DLL :( I've made a note of this in the liveusb-creator Developers Guide, and also a note on the front page about having to extract the entire zip before running. I'm not a RH employee, so any decisions on what goes into RHEL is *way* above my pay grade :). Somehow I don't think that Sugar will ever be in RHEL, however - it's just not something that's designed for the enterprise, nor I think is there a desire on anyone's part to support any one version of it for 7 years. However, there is a repository called EPEL (Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux) where it could fit, if someone is willing to package it. The only issues that I foresee there is if Sugar requires a newer version of Python than what's available in RHEL, then that would be a non-starter From gdk at redhat.com Wed Oct 15 14:02:05 2008 From: gdk at redhat.com (Greg Dekoenigsberg) Date: Wed, 15 Oct 2008 10:02:05 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Sugar in RHEL In-Reply-To: <2cb127c8f5d90b2361d111281e2eb4ee@127.0.0.1> References: <2cb127c8f5d90b2361d111281e2eb4ee@127.0.0.1> Message-ID: On Wed, 15 Oct 2008, David Farning wrote: > What will be the process for migrating the new Sugar packages from > Fedora into RHEL? I think that's unlikely for quite a while. Would they be satisfied with seeing it in EPEL, which is the Extras repository for Enterprise Linux? Because getting the packages into EPEL would be much simpler. What's their motivation? Maybe there's a contact I could talk with? The consensus on the list was that we; Package Sugar for Fedora-done, Start Sugar as a standard x-session-done, Work on shrinking the memory requirements-good progress. At that point, they indicated that they would be willing to take another look at Sugar. Now that the Fedora OLPC team has met the orginal three critria, I have started another thread about what areas we should target next. The requirement that Sugar be on REHL was not an answer to a specific question. It was based on a general LTPS Fedora into RHEL? Is there a backports repository? This commit adapted the Browse activity to the new API, and broke it with the older: http://dev.laptop.org/git?p=web-activity;a=commitdiff;h=9afbf7e567ff602f0137f2d369f16afc79b154d8#patch2 So I guess that if F9 cannot update to a newer Sugar, then older activities should be used. Fedora 9 packages are obsolete and doesn't really work at the moment :( Even if we updated Sugar we would be in troubles with pyxpcom. I am a librarian and a manager of a computing unit in the Hesburgh Libraries at the University of Notre Dame. We have a 10-server RHEL/GFS cluster to manage several enterprise business and end-user systems for a consortia of four private colleges located around Notre Dame. Fedora has been my daily desktop environment since FC2, and I've been a linux user on and off since picking up Red Hat Linux 3.03 back around 1996/97 or so. I am going to join the SIG in order to step up coverage of the Fedora OLPC SIG in Fedora Weekly News. I recently attended the Ohio LinuxFest, and the XOs we had at the Fedora booth were a huge draw for attendees, and I think highlighting more of the work of the SIG will pay dividends for the broader Fedora project as a whole. Welcome :) Well, the meetings have been moved to Thursday, at the same time - at least, they took place then in the last weeks. I'll try to make as many of the meetings as I can, and will usually be a few minutes late, since I have a standing meeting over lunch Thursdays each week. Tomorrow I have a meeting 1-3 so won't be able to make that one, but next week should be doable. I'll plug this into my schedule. For the packages like the libertas firmware its just a matter of moving the newer builds that are in the OLPC branches into rawhide and getting them built. Alot of the OLPC only packages don't have anything in devel anyway, and the last just need a final check that there any differences between OLPC/F-9/rawhide before they're untagged so as to pull the mainline package. For things like NetworkManager (and evince being the other that immediately springs to mind) where there's an older version in the OLPC-3 branch, flagging them to make sure they're kept track of is worthwhile. In most cases, they're "something needs to be ported" -- eg, some of the Sugar bits for the new NetworkManager dbus api or similar. Keeping that in a bug blocking the FedoraOLPCDelta bug seems like probably the lowest-effort way of doing so Jeremy From dfarning at sugarlabs.org Wed Oct 22 13:18:48 2008 From: dfarning at sugarlabs.org (David Farning) Date: Wed, 22 Oct 2008 08:18:48 -0500 Subject: Introduction of new member Message-ID: <9ea71634543c3ea3ca67ec788e3bf71e@127.0.0.1>  Hey PascalGreat to have you with us.  Indiana is a leader in the open source in education field.Fedora OLPC is actually two project for the price of one:) One side is running Fedora on the XO and the other is running Sugar on a stock Fedora systems.thanksdavid On 10/21/2008, 11:49, Pascal Calarco (pcalarco at nd.edu) wrote:Hi folks -- I am an Ambassador from Indiana, USA, and also on the editorial team for Fedora Weekly News. Pre-orders for the F10 OLPC SD cards will start October 28 at On-Disk.com. I'll update the list with the URL and price once it's posted. As we get closer to the actual release of F10 and G1G1, I'll also have the cards listed at Amazon.com Some selling points for the Fedora option on the XO... 1) for adults who may not find the Sugar environment practical for daily use, the Fedora 10 option allows the machine to behave in a more familiar way. 2) In this sense, the XO is on-par with an Asus Eee PC, except your purchase during the G1G1 promotion directly effects the lives of children. After some discussion/debate, I'd like to invite folks to sign-up to the XFCE test team for Fedora 10 on the XO. While GNOME will continue to be the desktop offered with this years G1G1, I certainly don't want to discourage folks from testing alternatives. I do want to emphasize though that GNOME is the primary focus for Fedora on the XO. The work that Josh Bresser's and the Performance Test team is doing is very important in identifying memory/cpu/"disk" hogs on the XO. Additionally, I am by no means an XFCE expert (or even a user). If you've been talking on the list about using XFCE and you're experienced in that space ... sign up. Sign up at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/XO_Test_Roll_Call. Once you sign up, I'll be asking the team to: 1. Select a team name 2. Select a team lead 3. Begin fleshing out a test plan More details on the team roles is defined in the test plan at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/TestPlans/Fedora10_On_XO#Responsibilities. Use this time to encourage people to visit http://laptop.org and talk up just how spectacular the XO is. Remember, there are lots of people out there who will stand in line for days waiting to buy electronics and this is their chance to have something 'exclusive' since the XO isn't something you can buy at your local electronics store. With the F10 option for the XO, adults who may not find the child focused graphical interface called Sugar practical for daily use, Fedora allows the XO to behave in a more familiar way. In this sense, the XO is on-par with any small form factor laptop except your purchase of an XO during the Give One Get One promotion directly effects the lives of children. Again, thinking about all those people who don't think twice about buying smart phones, game systems, and the like - there's no corporate profit with the XO, just a chance to better the lives of children all over the world. ~Karlie Robinson From bkearney at redhat.com Tue Oct 28 12:34:15 2008 From: bkearney at redhat.com (Bryan Kearney) Date: Tue, 28 Oct 2008 08:34:15 -0400 Subject: Fedora XO Camera Test - meeting recap In-Reply-To: <5256d0b0810271113j60326f45ree8cd7028373e625@mail.gmail.com> References: <1225052741.3080.2.camel@kennedy> <4905F7A2.6030005@redhat.com> <1225131084.25414.22.camel@ignacio.lan> <5256d0b0810271113j60326f45ree8cd7028373e625@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <490706C7.7010001@redhat.com> Peter Robinson wrote: >>>> 3. I also tried the latest livecd script from git (which has the --compress option) but that didn't work at all for me. It kept erroring out claiming there was only ~1700mb free on the card, which is completely wrong. So it thought there wasn't enough space for the image, and quit. I spent several hours just trying to make a bootable SD card last night and had no luck. Is this the state we're currently in? If people have been successful can someone please doc the real steps somewhere? The wiki instructions don't seem to work. I added the --compress option last night, and it has been working fine for me. Builds are failing because numpy grew a dependency on python-nose; we could pin numpy back to the old version, accept the new dependency on python-nose (200KB compressed), or fork the package. I commented on a bug asking if there's a way to lose the dependency in the main numpy package: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=465999 - Chris. -- Chris Ball From karlie_robinson at webpath.net Thu Oct 30 11:41:27 2008 From: karlie_robinson at webpath.net (Karlie Robinson) Date: Thu, 30 Oct 2008 07:41:27 -0400 Subject: SD card instructions In-Reply-To: <4908999F.3020409@webpath.net> References: <49073C6F.1000609@webpath.net> <2bcfd3d60810280947k27bf6ec4i4153fa993ebae1d8@mail.gmail.com> <4907441F.4020908@webpath.net> <2bcfd3d60810281104h20afedb8ve9cc4751baceee8e@mail.gmail.com> <4908999F.3020409@webpath.net> Message-ID: <49099D67.6030902@webpath.net> They're done! and they're wonderful. Message-ID: <490A2818.8090209@when.com> Hi everybody, I'm proud to be announce the availability of our Fedora Sugar Spin, which incorporates the Sugar Desktop Environment on a Fedora Live CD. So, what is this in specific? With this spin, you'll be able to run Sugar, which is developed by Sugarlabs and the desktop environment used on the OLPC, directly from a Live CD! You'll find several activities on the image including most notably... * sugar-browse - a web browsing activity based on xulrunner * sugar-write - a word processor based on abiword ...among with several other applications introducing e.g. chat support. We, the OLPC SIG, will be importing further activities into Fedora, which might be installed using 'yum install sugar-*' at a later time. Where can you get it? Easily, here: http://sdz.fedorapeople.org/olpc/sugar-spin.iso Here's the SHA1 checksum, just if you're interested: f032ab45aa116c2728dcd2d676e29a5ee114fd1d sugar-spin.iso And what if you wanted to put it quickly onto your USB Key? Even easier! You'll just need to grab Luke Macken's liveusb-creator, which already includes support for the Sugar Spin. Here's the link: https://fedorahosted.org/releases/l/i/liveusb-creator/liveusb-creator-3.0.zip Thank you everybody, who made this possible! --Sebastian From gdk at redhat.com Thu Oct 30 21:32:35 2008 From: gdk at redhat.com (Greg Dekoenigsberg) Date: Thu, 30 Oct 2008 17:32:35 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Announcing Fedora Sugar Spin! The "patch" is that they use an xorg.conf and hard-code 1024x768 as their default resolution. We don't use an xorg.conf at all[1] in Fedora and instead rely on the X server to be able to probe things. Cirrus hardware doesn't support any form of reasonable DDC and thus it goes with its fallback which is 800x600. Given that most of the hardware which ends up using the fallback paths is old and that hardware is the hardware most likely to have problems with > 800x600, it's not really safe to change that. * sugar-browse - a web browsing activity based on xulrunner * sugar-write - a word processor based on abiword ..among with several other applications introducing e.g. chat support. It seem like some of the packages submitted for review uses git snapshots. I would prefer to get releases from upstream for various reasons. I wrote a script to make it trivial to make a source release and I'm figuring out the best way to solicit activity authors to get in the habit. If the script is trivial, perhaps it's something we put on the shoulders of the packagers, rather than the maintainers? I ran into this when I tried to package Pippy. I think the problem is that Activities are perhaps a bit lighter weight than many more "formal" applications, and thus the notion of a "release" is a bit less... clear. This may bite us for a number of reasons. There's a whole art around release engineering, even in its most minimal form, that you sort of have to "buy into". Ideally, we could just say "create release tarballs" and make it so by fiat... but I don't yet have a feel for how committed activity developers are in general. --g
