It did not.

Entered 'startx -- :1' at a text console.  The system did not bring 
up a GUI session for this startx command.  After waiting a while, I 
did a ctrl-C and looked at /var/log/Xorg.1.log -- saw nothing that 
was not normal -- it had come up with all the usual messages, then 
had closed when I killed the startx -- but there was no clue for how 
come the screen (should have been on ctrl-alt-F8) was not shown.
