It segfaults with this patch. My wild guesses:

the template is constant, although, quoting the manpage:
"Since it will  be 
modified,  template  must  not  be  a  string  constant,  but should be
declared as a character array."

The other possibility I see is that something is needed to 
convert the resulting char* to string.
