OK. Some responses

- Yes, I used the "old" version :-(. The new one is OK for svn and pkg-config
- Even though the post/postun scriptlets does not fail if update-mime-database
is missing, I don't see any reason not to add a dependency for them to ensure
  that installation works as intended.
- I don't really have the competence to give advice on this. But it feels
strange, is there really stuff in the binaries which is not generated from
the source? If so, I think the way to go is to strip down this binary to
a very minimun before it's shipped. This should also clarify the situation
upstream, where it ought to be handled.
- If this subpackage with a configuration file is needed, maybe it should
  be renamed?
- Good point on installation issues!

Cheers!
