Could you please analyze which library is different on your systems?

Something must be up, since it works for Christoph, and for most other
mainstream distributions. (inc Gentoo, Debian and OpenSuSE) 

They don't seem to have these problems, so I tend to believe it is an
environment issue. Something with one of the underlying libs (the way they are
compiled for example).
