Interesting.  I can duplicate that, but if I compile without optimization, that
goes away (but getupt_long_only returns unexpected value 63.

without optimization:
$ ./wordwarvi --xxx
./wordwarvi: unrecognized option `--xxx'
Unexpected return value 63 from getopt_long_only()


With optimizatino:
$ ./wordwarvi --xxx
Segmentation faul
Seems to be crashing here:
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
