Some suggestions not related to packaging guidelines:

* Post to http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/distributions and
contact other distribution maintainers. Check if other distributions have
patches you can merge. 

* Specify a Roadmap in the wiki or a TODO in the source code on your plans
forward

* I also recommend using LZMA compress archives (tar.xz)
