Do you know what the term SONAME refers to?

Yes, and you do so already.

Uh? Dozens if not hundreds of library projects, which produce shared libraries,
use libtool (via autoconf/automake) and include it in their tarballs.

Well, see comment 13 and remember that the libtar author would prefer for forks
not to use the libtar name. You've renamed the tarball name, but everything
else still is in the libtar namespace. This will lead to complications if you
ever (a) plan to really touch the SONAME, and even if (b) you plan to extend
the API.
