No properly installed system should be missing a package which Provides:
redhat-release. This has been true for at least the last 5 years.

If our buildroots don't have it, then thats a serious failure (its in
System Environment/Base).

And I don't disagree with your "gross" assessment, but its the least
evil solution I could find.
