Do I need need special glasses, more sugar, special narcotics,
patience, or all of the above?

I poked in the desktop list archives and it seems the preference there
was to test for gtk-update-icon-cache rather than ignore all output.
So the scriptlet should now look like this (correcting any wrapping
peoples mail clients do)?

if [ -x %{_bindir}/gtk-update-icon-cache ]; then
    %{_bindir}/gtk-update-icon-cache --quiet %{_datadir}/icons/hicolor || :
fi
