This is to announce that we plan to release R version 2.8.1 on Monday,
December 22, 2008.
Release procedures start Friday, December 12.
Those directly involved should review the generic schedule at
http://developer.r-project.org/release-checklist.html
The source tarballs will be made available daily (barring build
troubles) and the tarballs can be picked up at
http://cran.r-project.org/src/base-prerelease/
a little later.
Binary builds are expected to appear starting Monday 15 at the latest.
For the Core Team

Is there an official R repo for bleeding edge R?
I mean I know this list is for getting R into F, but as a 'test bed'
for early F/R yum adopters like us?

No, but the new R packages hit rawhide first. You could always do:
yum --enablerepo=rawhide update R
Of course, that might drag in other things from rawhide if any of its
dependencies have notably changed, but its the best thing I can offer.
Alternately, I will announce when I've built R for the other Fedora
targets, you can then download them from the testing updates and give
karma so it goes into stable faster.
It only takes three votes to move an update from testing to stable. :)

It generally isn't a big job to tweak R.spec to either apply
the R-patched diffs or to build a newer version of R.
For people who have R code to maintain it is nice to test
whenever a non-trivial patch appears rather than wait for
people to find problems when a new release arrives.

R 2.8.1 is packaged up and queued up for testing. Please test this out:
Fedora 9:
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/rpy-1.0.3-6.fc9,R-2.8.1-1.fc9
Fedora 10:
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/rpy-1.0.3-6.fc10,R-2.8.1-1.fc10
Once you've tested it, please, please, go to the update URL above and
click "Add A Comment". If it works for you, click "Works for me" and
write a little bit about how you tested it. That counts as a "+1" of
karma for that update. When it gets to +3, the system automatically
flags the update to be pushed to stable.
You don't have to specifically test rpy to give karma on the update, I
have a high degree of confidence in rpy continuing to work.
Thanks in advance,

That's F-9, yes. F-10 should be just updates-testing (I think)
You could also manually download the files locally, and call:
yum update R-*.rpm libRmath-*
