I might as well describe why...

When they were first added, a graphic designer sent some candidate
images that used a separate font for nearly every character.  The
developers thought this was intensely silly, and called the wacky
candidate images "ransom notes" because of the idea of ransom notes
being comprised of pasted letters out of newspapers.  The name stuck.
