The -BOOT kernel is not normally used on installed systems. I could
use an i586, i686 or athlon kernel on an i386/i486 because they are
instruction compatible. The problem is that neither of these
automatically get installed during installation which causes even a
minimal install on a i486 to take a long time because of the missing
dependency.

Bye,
Leonard.
