i must have missed that.  that would be an unspeakably silly limitation
since a separate /usr partition is normally a good idea.

i'm reading /etc/rc.sysinit to see under what circumstances the
graphical boot is invoked, and there's a $GRAPHICAL variable that
is tested, but it's not clear where it's set.  i'm still perusing.
