That's new. can you trace things and find more of what happens?
I think GDM has some tracing options. Also try saving more of the 
syslog, the default Red Hat settings ignore a lot of messages.

I'm guessing some file/directory is tested in a way that doesn't trigger 
the mount, or times out too soon.

Since it used to work, you might check/report it upstream to the 
gnome/gdm team. They may at least help the debug.
