3com 905 ethernet card problems

I saw similar behavior on my AMD64 system in 64bit mode.  The answer was 
to boot with acpi=off (add it to your grub.conf if it works).  As it is an 
ACPI issue, it might not be limited to 64bit kernels.  More detail is
