Also the method of installing java is:

1) Append to the end of /etc/profile
JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_01
PATH=/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_01/bin:$PATH
This way java is available systemwide.

2) Install the plugin: link (do NOT copy)
 /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_01/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so
to /usr/lib/mozilla-1.4/plugins

HTH ... also perhaps if you could post the precise error messages
someone more knowledgable than myself might help ... if the 
above method does not slove your problem.
