How to duplicate a HD using dd

The parted command will let you repartition the new drive and then copy
filesystems from one disk to the other.  I think its smart about it and
only copies the actual used parts of the filesystem, which could save
alot of time if you have fairly empty filesystems. I've used it alot.
Then if the new disk is bigger you can resize the filesystem before
copying the next one.
