up2date crashes und some circumstances

Did you update up2date first?  It really should be the first one you
try, and alone.  The retry for other packages, it is a beta up2date on
the cds. :)

There was mention of this earlier, specifically that up2date needs to
recognize when the server is down, and handle that intelligently.  This
would be a very similar improvement.
