Preserving evolution mail during OS changes

Before doing a fresh install of Severn on my laptop, I copied a tarball of
my home directory to another system. After Severn was intalled, I restored
my ~/evolution/ subdirectory from that tarball, and also reviewed my send
& receive mail configs.
This restored all old e-mail and folders. Inbound e-mail resumed
immediately, but I am unable to send evolution e-mail thru my ISP as
before. Every time I try to send a test message I get the following error:
Error while performing operation:
MAIL FROM response error: Command unrecognized: ""
NOTE: If there are any interested sendmail+evolution gurus reading this, I
can provide a Send/Receive session captured with Ethereal for diagnosis.
I'm not running a local DNS, and my home network gateway provides DHCP and
NAT services. /etc/resolv.conf points to my ISP's nameservers.
Fortunately my ISP offers RHL's squirrelmail web client to its
subscribers. I must now use that service to compose and send all outbound
e-mail (like now), but it's a PITB. Did I fail to do something I should
have when restoring my evolution files? Some dumb configuration setting I
forgot?
