Definitely don't use XFree86, as it is unlikely to be an XFree86 
bug/problem.  The window manager is what handles window 
management.  If you're using metacity, then file a bug against 
metacity.  Downgrade metacity to an older release and I'll bet 
money that the problem disappears.
