Adding this to my grub.conf for the kernel-2.4.22-1.2049.nptl
did not work. I am able to boot into init level 1, but for init 3 it
locks up. I didn't try to boot into graphics mode 5 with the new kernel.
The graphical boot loader locks up (or is too slow loading without
feedback for me.)

The "nopcmcia" option is what I was trying for though.

dmesg outputs the below: (The only really working kernel for this
ze4315us HP Pavilion). What system information would be useful? Would
information from the newer kernel in init 1 be of any use?
