If it's an usb stick you'll see it on the list of usb devices anyway; 
even without driver.
Usb joysticks will be handled by the hid driver (the same one that 
drivers keyboards and mice), so try loading that one.

The /dev entries are always available, even when the hardware is not 
available...

That one should work if you have a joystick attached and the right driver.

If you were running a sun javastation you could have damaged your flash 
rom ;) - ever heard of knowing what you're doing? Randomly probing /dev 
entries won't help you much...
