Crash on boot in VirtualPC 6.1.1

I've tried changing most of the setting already (including running it 
in the slow mode designed for self-modifying code).  It makes no 
difference.  As I said, the install CD boots fine, and includes the 
same version of the kernel, so I assume that the problem results from 
some extra settings or modules loaded with the installed kernel 
(perhaps something not P2 compatible?)  Can anyone suggest what this 
might be?
