I don't use gnome, but when faced with similar delays opening a browser on an
FC1 machine I installed for a friend, tcpdump monitoring of in that case ppp0
(eth0 maybe for you) reminded me very quickly I had left my local
nameserver's IP address in /etc/resolv.conf as the primary nameserver for his
dialup setup, which was going out to his ISP making DNS queries to
192.168.0.1 ;-)

Have a peep at the network traffic during this delay on another virtual
terminal using tcpdump in case that can shed some light.
