This does not help with the hda problems but it could let you proceed until 
that is fixed.

There is a way to put grub onto a floppy and then boot the floppy.  Check the 
grub info file.  You might also check out installing FC1 with the 2.4 kernel 
since it does not have the hd partition table problems.
