GTK apps die if I try use the keyboard

I have a very unusual problem with all my GTK2 apps at the moment. A soon as I
try to use the keyboard, they just die. anyone ever experienced this before. I
entirely removed xorg, believing to be a configuration problem, and I removed
all configuration stuff, and reinstalled, but to no avail.

Any pointers?
