and just for fun - try setting:
keepalive=0 in your yum.conf under [main]
it seems like you're seeing network timeout issues which is most often
caused by:
1. slow/overloaded mirrors
2. slow/overloaded network connection
3. transparent proxies closing keepalives early
4. transparent proxies sucking.
