It's the subfields that add more information, you are correct the choice
of separator is mostly insignificant. Since one of the subfields is the
distribution and distribution names sometimes have a period in the name
(e.g. AS2.1) picking another separator such that you can retain the
distribution name as users know it by but still be easily human readable
is deemed a win.
