switchdesk not switching default to kde.

Even though my /etc/sysconfig/desktop reads DESKTOP="GNOME", I no longer now have the problem with switchdesk. Not since using yum to update my KDE to version 3.3.

What's the difference between display manager and desktop?
How do I know whether I'm running KDM or GDM?
