cups / nscd / system-config-printer

Hi,

I'm looking at the output of strace -f system-config-printer

There looks to be a problem with nscd not being available. When I run
system-config-services, nscd reports that it's dead but the lock file is
still there.

Other than caching the nameservers, what else does it do and could it
interfere with printing?
