The solution I use is "growisofs" from dvd+rw-tools, it works with 
DVD-R, DVD+R and the RW formats as well.

e.g.  growisofs -Z /dev/hdd=dvd.iso

Where /dev/hdd is obviously the DVD drive. This is with _no_ 
"hdd=whatever" options specified.
