The 53.36 is the latest available driver, the Beta 46.20 (what you refer
to below?) is older and does not support 2.6.x kernels without patches.
You could try these patches, from www.minion.de, which worked very well
until nVidia had 2.6 support (which is this guy's work applied to their
official).

Are there any relevant changes to the kernel config between the version
that worked and any that don't?  The configs are all included in the
kernel-source package.
